How to Gift

Investment Piece, fashion blogger, gift, how to, LA, CA

Loves, it’s that time of year. We’re giving, we’re getting, we’re buying gifts. And most of us think that we’re great shoppers, but does that make us great gift givers? In other words, do we know how to gift? And how to find the best gifts for those that we love? I’ve been beginning to work on my Holiday Gift Guides and these questions have been on my mind. What makes a great gift? Do we know how to give one?

Probably yes, and probably no. Gift Giving isn’t as straight forward as other shopping: there’s more pressure, more temptation, and this time of year can flat out be overwhelming, which means we may be shopping fast. So, how do you gift in a thoughtful way, and find things that your loved ones will love? I’m here to help! I like to think that besides being a professional shopper, I’m great at giving gifts. However, there has been some trial and error in my gifting. Below are some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in how to gift; I hope that you find this helpful!

Stay Appropriate
I don’t just mean with gag gifts (which I think are difficult to pull off), but with price and big-ness. I think we’ve all been on both the giving or recieving side of a gift that was just too much. Either too expensive or too big for the relationship (think that one guy who you went out with twice and he gave you a ring for Christmas–that’s what I’m talking about). Here’s the thing- I get wanting to go big. I love to shop, I love finding things that I know people will love, I love giving gifts. So when I find something “perfect”, it can be easy to get caught up and forget that it may be “too much”. The solution? Have a conversation. Yes, it might be awkward, but will save you having a much more awkward conversation later on. Not sure if you’re exchanging gifts? Ask. And set a budget if needed, set expectations. That gives you a place to start, and makes it easier to control yourself!

Really Listen
People have a way of telling us things without being direct. The people in your life have probably told you what you want–even if they haven’t given you a wish list. The trick is to really respect it. Your mom doesn’t want anything over $40? Stay within $40. Your sister keeps saying how tired she is? Give her a spa day. Gifts don’t have to be big, the most meaningful gifts are ones where we let the other person know that we hear them. So don’t be afraid to really listen to what your loved ones want–and give it to them.

Events are great gifts
If you love a shopper like me, the risk you take is that we will buy ourselves what we want. An alternative? Give events–plan nights out, buy concert or ballet tickets, plan trips. All are not only great ideas, it gives the shopper in your life a place to wear her clothes. But this isn’t limited to shoppers. As we get older exchanging gifts with every friend can be too much, but a dinner/coffee/drink together is always a lovely treat! My suggestion? Plan it for the new year, when everyone has a bit more wiggle room in their schedule!

Gift Cards Aren’t Bad
You can get a gift card to just about anywhere now–the movies, dinner, coffee,as well as “cash” gift cards. I know that some look down on gift cards as they aren’t “thoughtful”, but I think they can be. Know someone who loves movies but doesn’t get to go? A movie gift card is perfect (and if you get a babysitter if they’re a parent, even better!). Know someone who is saving for a big purchase? A donation to that cause can be incredibly thoughtful. I think it goes back to the listening thing! In appropriate places, gift cards can give someone what they really want!

Other gift giving tips? I found these articles from LifeHack, HuffingtonPost, and Real Men Style to be a great help!

Our gift guides start in earnest in the coming weeks, although you can see our gift guides from last year on the side bar.

I’d love to know–what are your tips for gift giving? And what would you like to see in a gift guide?

High School Fashion

Investment Piece: High School Fashion,
Investment Piece: high school fashion
Investment Piece: High School Fashion

Let’s go around the room and confess something.
I can go first.
It’s trite, but true.
I wasn’t popular in high school. I was chubby. And tried to hard. My friends were amazing and I had fun, but my high school experience is more the transforming swan rather than the High School Musical Variety.
(Random side note: I think everyone’s high school experience would be made better through more musical numbers).

One thing I did in high school? I tried to make the trends I saw in magazines work. I’m completely dating myself BUT, I wore knee high socks. And the little clips in my hair. Basically anything I saw in teen magazines or Vogue I tried to recreate in a way. (Isn’t it weird that we at some level always know what we’re supposed to do?) And while it didn’t work in high school (turns out small town high schools are not the place to try new trends), I’m glad that I got into the habit of trying trends and figuring out what I liked. If you read Monday’s post, you know that I admit when my mom was right. In high school she told me that you want to be the kind of person that blooms after high school–and loves, she was right.

Investment Piece: High School Fashion

I bring up high school, and high school fashion, not because I’m sitting around thinking about it, but because I think high school fashion is back. Case in point? Fanny Packs. Belt bags if you’re trying to make it high fashion, but let’s be honest: it’s a fanny pack. However, these are not the fanny packs we had in high school. those were black (or neon) and cheap and awful. Don’t tell my trying to be cool high school self, but I may like (really LIKE) these fanny packs. Leather. Adjustable. Able to go from your waist to over the shoulder. Not so stiff and triangle, but supple leather and shapes that we can identify. I think even the cool girls in high school would wear these! Perfect for nights out, concerts, festivals, or any time it’s just nice to have all your stuff and use your hands at the same time!

It did get mentioned to me that my kicks (sneakers, Mom) with a skirt is high school fashion as well. Is it? I thought that’s just how we wear them, but if that’s high school fashion I’m down (let’s just get amazing kicks and great skirts like this leather one). What do you think?

So, maybe the trends I tried to make happen in high school fell flat. Maybe that’s ok. This high school fashion trend is something I think wins now, and isn’t that what matters?

Tell me: how was high school? What did you wear? What are your current thoughts on fanny packs? And high school fashion?

I got some picks for you (affiliate links, which does not affect price for you). I’m excited to get your take on them!

Trend to Try: Leopard (EVERYTHING)

#InvestmentPiece #trendtotry #leopard

Ok. You got me. Leopard is not a trend to try. In fact, haven’t you heard? Leopard is a neutral (everyone says so). I love a great leopard piece: shoes, skirts, dresses, pants, jackets, tops, you name it. It goes with everything (I love mine with pops of color and concert tees) and yet manages to stand out. I’m a fan of anything that knows when to blend in and when to say something, so it’s no secret that leopard and I are old friends:

Investment Piece, fashion, style, high fashion, vintage, indecision, dolce Gabbana, CA, TX
Investment Piece, fashion, Jcrew, how to, ca, Tx

And I’ve always done my best to alert you to all the amazing leopard pieces I find. I feel as if leopard makes an appearance on every fall trends list (see the one I did this year here), but this year is special. Yes, leopard is still on the list, but look in every store, every magazine, every editorial. Leopard EVERYTHING is everywhere.

Leopard suits (I love the blue one from Banana Republic pictured above. Shop it here). Leopard pants. Leopard shoes. Leopard skirts. Leopard dresses. Leopard everything you can think of. Not only is it available everywhere you shop, but we’re being shown outfits, outfit inspiration, and outfits to try that include leopard not as a neutral or as a statement but as the star, and leopard everything. I LOVE it. Leopard suits? Let’s wear them. Leopard skirts with leopard shoes? Let’s do it. A leopard dress and a leopard belt? I’m in!

#InvestmentPiece #trendtotry #leopard

What about you? Are you on board with leopard everything? Do you prefer to keep leopard as an accent? Do you wear leopard as a neutral?

I’d love to know!!

How to Mix Business and Pleasure

Investment Piece: How to mix business and pleasure
Investment Piece: How to Mix Business and Pleasure
Investment Piece: How to mix business and pleasure
Investment Piece: How to Mix Business and Pleasure
Investment Piece: How to mix Business and Pleasure
The lights dim. The projector comes on. You give a world class presentation. Your co workers laugh at the right time, they cry at the right time. Your posture improves just a little with the realization that you’re good at this, you got this. Then the lights come on. Your co-workers gasp and your cheeks turn red. Because you’re naked.

Oldest nightmare in the books, right? I’ve had it too.

Plot Twist: I wrote this post in bed in my pjs. Working for yourself, from home has its perks. So, I get that I might not be an “expert” in business attire.* And I get that maybe shorts aren’t the best look for your office. What I do get and love? A great juxatipositon. What else I weirdly love? Shorts and a blazer.
(See here)
The perfect mix of business and pleasure. Where this combo is a match: those weird “networking” parties at a dive bar, happy hour, when you need to look polished but it’s 95 in October (seriously, WTH), or any business meeting that is casual. Or in general when there is that subtle mix of business and pleasure.

I’ve spoken before about my journey to find the “perfect” short: not too short, not too tight, and not too “why is that old lady trying to look young”. It’s a tightrope that’s not easy to walk. This summer, I dreamed of the perfect, longer shorts that would look great with heels or sandals, casual or dressy, and would still be cool. I thought I might have to resort to chopping one of my beloved vintage pairs, but then I found these. And it felt like all my problems had been solved. (Ok, I still don’t have world peace or the Gucci shoes my soul needs, but we’re making progress). Also, I’m thinking of wearing these babies with boots, and maybe even tights when the weather cooperates. We’ll see where that takes us.
investment Piece: How to mix business and pleasure

This blazer is made more business appropriate with a shell underneath. If you dare, and the moment is right, I love a blazer with nothing underneath; pro tip: make sure the buttons on that blazer come high, or chose one like this with a built in scarf! What I love about this one is the built in scarf, when you’re mixing business and pleasure it allows you to go shell-less. And also looks great with skirts!
Investment Piece: How to mix Business and Pleasure

*SideNote: You talk and I listen. I get that a lot of what I post here, a lot of “fashion” isn’t business appropriate. But loves, a lot can be made to be business appropriate. And I can do my part to present tricks and more business looks. Does this mean no more pleasure? Nope. I’m still in love with sheer, and the like. I still think that there’s a time and a place for you to wear that as well. But, we will be starting a series on showcasing more business looks, and more tips for how to make our “pleasure looks” more business friendly. Have an idea? Want to us to address a specific look or trend? Email me! Racheladelicia@investmentpiece.com, I love hearing from you!

What do you think? Is this a great mix of business and pleasure? Where could you wear this combo?

I’ve picked my fave pieces (both exact and similar) and linked them below! Shop, let’s be twins! Then we can go to one of those weird mixers and be the best dressed there!

Sunday Chronicles: This/That and some Fall Trends

Loves.

It’s been a week.
A month.
A Year.

I know that this is the space where I usually share my thoughts, experiences, dating with you. And I love this space, it’s sacred and some of my favorite of our time together. This week? This travel season? I couldn’t put words to paper (or screen). I just couldn’t. (And I have another great ex-files coming up!) So I did this instead:

I’ve spent the past few weeks shopping and thinking about fall, and our fall trends. (Remember when we chatted about that? Refresh here). I’ve identified some more fall trends I might like to try and wanted to share them with you!

First up:
Remember glitter boots?
Investment Piece: Fall Trends: Sequins and Glitter
Well, what do we think about Rhinestone Boots?

I fell in love with these boots at Free People, and started thinking about all the ways we could wear them: with jeans and a white tee, a sweater dress, a shirt dress, as a statement, as an accent. I also found some reasonable options for us! (Some are under $60!)
*Note: These are affiliate links, I do receive commission from these, though that doesn’t affect your price!

My picks:

Another fall trend I never thought I’d like?
Vinyl Pants
I saw some on Instagram. I tried on some patent leather pants at RecessLA, (side note: they didn’t fit by a hair. Have some nude patent leather pants, maybe Pucci? Hit me up!) And it was love.
Some vinyl and patent leather pants we may love:

And, how do we feel about
White Booties ?

I think I like them, but more research may be needed. Let’s shop my picks and see how we feel:

And loves! Don’t forget, we have a giveaway coming up! (Refresh yourself here) Check out SkinPrint and let me know which product you might like to win! The product it’s the most inquiries will be in the giveaway (and that will start Tuesday!) Look, shop, and let me know!

I hope that your Sunday involves a lot of rest and time with people you love. I’m catching up-all my looks are now updated (shop my site! Over on the left) and we’re working on getting the best content up for the next week!

Wishing us all a week of amazing shoes and peace!

Jeans and a Shirt

Investment Piece: Jeans and a shirt
Investment Piece: Jeans and a Shirt
Investment Piece: Jeans and a Shirt

It’s just casual.
You can throw on anything.
It doesn’t matter what you wear.

Loves, I can put together a couture look, be impeccably dressed for any date or work event. And yet: nothing scares me more than the words above. Seriously! What do they mean? Who am I supposed to be if I just “wear anything”? What do you want by casual? (Yes, maybe my therapist and I have more work to do). BUT,I don’t think I’m alone is saying : “There are times when telling me to just throw something on scares me”. You might think that because I work in fashion it might come easy to me. No such luck (don’t tell, but I want to always look great, even when I don’t, and that leads to some over thinking when the term casual is used). So, to to make sure that these words and situations don’t throw me into a tailspin, I’ve come up with a formula to ensure that I don’t over think, that I stay within casual bounds, and that I feel great in!

Jeans and a shirt.

Jeans and a shirt.

Don’t over think it. Don’t make it more than it is. Just jeans and a shirt. Grab your best fitting jeans. I’m just in love with these AYR jeans, you’ve seen them many times before. (Need refreshers? Try here, here, and here). And a great blouse or shirt. I’m partial to silk, love this vintage one I snagged at A Current Affair, but try a classic button down or pussy bow! Add amazing shoes, these spiked Louboutins make me happy. And you’re good to go. Work, drinks, dinner, a movie, fall, spring. Add a jacket for winter. This combo has you covered. Takes away the fear that someone telling you to just “throw something on” can bring. Bonus? You look amazing and can concentrate on whatever amazing thing you’re doing.

Jeans and a shirt.

Maybe that’s the secret. Who knew?

Well, now it’s us.

Wishing you a happy Friday!

….This Way Comes

Remember Tuesday? We chatted about what we might be for Halloween. (Read all about it )

Fashion Halloween, mermaid, InvesmentPiece, blogger, CA, TX
The Good News? I sat down and thought about what I wanted to be for Halloween. The Bad News? I’m no closer to a decision than I was on Tuesday. Perhaps it’s that my Halloween plans are not quite firm, or that this month has been so busy that the thought of putting together an amazing costume feels overwhelming, or the fact that I want to be it all. Or is it all of the above?

So here’s the thing, I know that I have a ton that I can put together quickly at home-from witch to masquerade to t-shirts. But, what if I wanted to be something I can’t “throw together”? Today, I thought I’d share my fave costumes that you can just buy, because let’s be honest, sometimes that’s just easier!

The even better news? Ready to Buy Costumes have come a long way since the plastic dresses and masks we used to wear! (Though, I have to admit, I kind of loved those!)

But this year: Why don’t we be our own heroes?
Investment Piece: Halloween

Some of my fave super hero costumes:
(Note, these are affiliate links and I will get commission from them at no extra cost to you!)
Love this updated Wonder Woman look,
This Black Widow costume,
One of my childhood favorites, She RA

And if we’re being something we’re not, why not be bad?

Love this updated Catwoman look,
Meleficent, I was her in college (yep, I’ve always been cool),
a Vampire,
Love this Zombie costume,
this Wicked Witch look is spot on, and
This corpse costume is just amazing!

The possibilities are really endless! (And really, just a wig and makeup can make something a costume!)

Here are some of the other costumes I love:

And now that we know what’s out there to buy, let’s think. Meet back here and say what we’re being? Great plan!

Investment Piece, Fashion, Halloween, bad witch
Real talk? Last Year I was so prepped for Halloween! I had customers a plenty, was so excited about dressing up, and everything I saw had the potential for a great Halloween look. This year? I’m behind, and haven’t thought further ahead than this still-favorite Wildfox shirt. (Actually, I’ve thought about being Wonder Woman, but my custome is still in storage!) But with the holiday rapidly approaching, it’s time to get our thinking on!

What are you going to be for Halloween? I still love this about look from last year (are mermaids still in?).
Fashion Halloween, lady Macbeth, investment piece, fashion blogger,
And I still love the idea of being Lady Macbeth for Halloween (pictured above, and I still have the dress!)

Other things I’m thinking of: a couture dress with a mask. A cowgirl. A witch. A great shirt like above.
