Sunday Chronicles: The Holidays are Coming!

Investment Piece: Happy Holidays

We’re done with Halloween. And full speed into the holiday season.

Ok, if we’re honest, the rush into the holiday season started before Halloween. I went costume shopping for bits and pieces 2 weeks ago, my local craft store was taken over by Christmas. The rush to get to the holidays and Christmas? That’s another post. But we can’t hide our heads in the sand now, the holidays are coming!

Which is exciting! They don’t call the holiday season the most wonderful time of the year for nothing! Traditions, treats, cocktail parties, time with friends and family, snow (hopefully!), gifts, and all the trimmings. There are things that are only holiday activities and I love them all. From the build up to the actual days when we celebrate, I’ve always been a fan of the holidays. Yes, I’m the one who loves putting lights and decorations and cooking. That’s just the tip of my holiday iceberg.

But. The holidays can be a very difficult time. Sometimes it’s hard to be with our family and friends. We may be missing people. The stress from the traditions, trimmings, parties, treats, gifts, and all the holidays things can be overwhelming. One of my best Thanksgivings was spent alone eating what I wanted, watching football, and doing laundry. I get it.

Yes, let’s not forget Thanksgiving!

As stressful as the holidays can be, we’re here to help! Starting in two weeks, our gift guide series will start! And we’d love some feedback! Do you like category gift guides (i.e. For him/for her/stocking stuffers/etc)? Or do you want budget based gift guides (i.e. Under $100/etc?) Or do you want a combo of them? My goal is to make holiday shopping SO easy on you, so let me know what guides would help you the most!

And speaking of being helpful, I know that many of you hate holiday shopping. I get that. For the holiday season, I’m running a special on my personal shopping services. From doing it all for you to just emailing options, there are ways to get me to the hard work for you. Prices start at $25 an hour, and I’d love to custom make a package that fits your needs! Email me at racheladelicia@investmentpiece.com!

Wishing us all a week of holiday calm and amazing shoes! Xo RA

The thing about a classic? It can be anything. One of the most versatile things you can invest in for your closet is a wrap dress. **

** if you’re not subscribed to my newsletter, get on it! You’ll get my top 10 investment pieces and spoiler alert! A wrap dress is on it.

But back to the disco (baby). Why did I feel like disco? A little bit of Halloween, a little bit of holiday party season coming, and just a little bit of needing to dress up. Sometimes, that’s all it is. The thing about a wrap dress? It can be ALL of those things. Just take this look–you could have been a #discobaby for Halloween, it’s perfect for all those upcoming cocktail parties, or just a fun look on the weekend. Or weeknight. I don’t judge.

And the thing is–the next morning you can throw on sneakers with a wrap dress, you’re good to go. Or boots. I happen to love the hose with sandals look, it’s so chic (and a little disco). And the thing about disco? It doesn’t have to be big or over the top. Disco can be the little details, or metallic accersories, or anything that implies you might be down to dance. I know, I know, disco implies a lot of things. What if we took the meaning of the word back?

This wrap dress is from a few years ago (I love the gold detail, yes, it inspired the disco), but I found you similar ones! I am a firm believer that hose are a thing you should always have on hand, it’s part of my Texan upbringing. And these shoes? My go-to’s. They’re from quite a few seasons ago, but I got your back and have linked similar ones below!

What kind of disco will you be hitting?

Cords. Keeping us all in the fall spirit since we were babies. In fact, what’s fall without a cord story?

Especially with our cord offerings this season. From wide legs to skirts, to suits, wide cords, fine cords, in every color of the rainbow. Cords are both a denim like staple, and a statement. I love this dark navy hue (it’s a neutral) and the cropped legs. It feels both easy and dressed up. And I’ve paired them with almost everything I own. How’s that for a cord story?

I’ve linked some of my favorite cord pieces below. I’d love to know: what’s your cord story?

Casual. It’s a mood.

I can be prone to extremes. Which isn’t always bad–but it does mean that I can often be found in either party attire or workout clothes. Not a lot of middle ground.

Yes, I love jeans and t-shirts and sweatshirts. I do. But, learning to be casual has been a process for me. Ask my mom-even as a kid, I would dress up in a party dress. Every day. And now? If I have an event, I have to be careful or else I overdress.

SideNote: I over dress a lot.

So, when I find a casual outfit that I love? I wear it. On repeat.
Here: I love leopard sweat pants. It’s like they’re dressy. And yes, I have thrown on a sweater and heels with these. It was still casual.
Everyone needs a chambray button down. There is so much you can wear it with.
Vans, and Vans with shearling lining are a cold weather must.
And blanket scarves are a luxury you didn’t know you needed.

And even though it’s casual, it feels like me. How do you casual?

Have I mentioned that I love fashion Halloween? You know that time of year when fashion and costumes intersect? I love it! See here. I’ve been everything from a Mermaid to Lady Macbeth, and this year I’m just as excited about my fashion Halloween costume this year!

I’m from The Birds! (Yes, that Alfred Hitchcock movie where birds attack). There are so many ways to do this fashion Halloween, but all of them are simple. Basically you need a skirt set, a bird(s), and fake blood. The screaming face is optional, but I like to think it adds to the look. I was inspired by a Pin I saw on Pintrest at the end of last October (yes, I’ve been waiting a year for this!).

For me, this is the perfect Fashion Halloween- it’s vintage, film based, and easy to pull together!

Investment piece: holiday card

This is one of those outfits that didn’t go quite as planned. It’s fall and I’m all about layers. So, I had to put a turtleneck under this jumpsuit. And a vintage Gucci belt as a necklace? Done. Trench. I mean- it is raining. Easy.

But. I thought that these boots would go under the jumpsuit legs. No go. They were too tight. My options were: Rock these statement boots or be barefoot. I went with a statement. And am glad I did.

It proved layering in all its forms works.
They provided a pop.
The compliments: “You look like Carrie Bradshaw.” “I love those boots!!!” And my most favorite: ” You look like a holiday card–in the best way!”

It’s getting to be that season, so I will take looking like a holiday card. Have you ever gotten a holiday card and felt sad?

Maybe it’s a sign we should be layering more! How are you showing up in the season?

Summer in Fall

Investment Piece: Summer in Fall

I have a thing for wearing Summer in fall. Fall Florals. Winter Florals. I’ve even been known to throw on a turtleneck under a Summer stunner to keep that magic going. So this? This should come as no surprise. Yes, I love fall and all the fashion that it brings with it. But there are times when I just can’t resist wearing Summer in fall.

The trick? A little bit of layering–or in this case pairing Summer pants with a cozy sweater. The right shoes (boots), and the right accersories (gloves), and you might be good to go. However, I think if we’re bringing summer into fall we have to pick the right kind of Summer. Moody florals, dark prints,* and those pieces that are right on the edge. It’s perfect for the summer pieces you got on sale and don’t want to wait to wear. This is also perfect for the summer pieces that you loved so much, you need to make them fall staples, too.

* Though, this is your reminder from me that there is no wrong season to wear black in!

I loved these pants all summer and when they went on sale I just couldn’t resist. Floral? Yes. But moody and dark. Perfect with a sweater. And yet, something tells me these pants will be just perfect with a bikini next summer. Maybe then we’ll do fall into Summer? Anything is possible!

Creme de la Creme.
The best of the best.
What does that mean?
How will you know if it’s the best of the best if you don’t try new things?
Like: shooting indoors,
Sweatshirts with gold skirts (they go with everything),
And show-stopping boots.

I recommend them all!

This combo is becoming my Creme de la Creme for the fall. I can’t stop.

Non-Basic

It’s finally fall. I know, I know, you’ve heard that one before, but this time it’s true. Most of us are enjoying cooler weather and getting to enjoy all those fall clothes (sweaters, coats, and boots) that we got in anticipation of this moment.
It’s thrilling.
And always leaves me a little apprehensive.
Here’s the thing my loves: I love sweater weather. I do. The falling temps, the layers, the comfy ways we can dress. I’m not against throwing on a sweater with boots and jeans- and most of us do, again and again. It’s a great combination. I honestly love it, and wear it again and again myself.
But it’s fall. So, what if we were a little non-basic this year?

Some of my fave ways to non-basic? I’m glad you asked!

Play with your Coats
Investment Piece, fashion blogger, vintage, high fashion, CA, TX
Embrace capes. Wear your coats as dresses. Think beyond camel and black. Don’t be afraid of color and texture. Belt your coats, play with your scarves, and let the topper be the star
My picks:

Non-Basic Boots
Investment Piece, Fashionblogger, vintage, cold weather, high fashion, YSL, Valentino, CA, TX
I’m a fan of you having your basics covered- black and brown. Personally, im partial to tall boots, but if you love ankle boots I get that too (I have a few). And once we get past the basics, I vote for boots that are non-basic. Play with color, pattern, texture. Nothing says non-basic like sparkly boots with your sweaters!
My picks:

Mix
Investment Piece: Non Basic
Textures-like Velvet and wool. Vintage and modern. Soft and hard. Casual and fancy. Rock your biker boots with a dress. A sweatshirt with fancy pants. I loved pairing this vintage velvet with a maxi skirt and biker boots!

My picks:

Socks/tights with your heels
Investment Piece: Trend to Try: Socks With Peep Toes
This was one of my first posts. And if you’re not wearing your heels (yes, even peep toes. Especially peep toes) with tights and socks, you’re missing out. Do it. Not only is it warm, it adds a new look to any shoes. AND it’s a way to wear your summer shoes year round. Do it!
Some of the tights I love:

Night Wear as Day Wear
Investment Piece: Non Basic
Part mixing, part texture, all don’t think your sequins and other luxe fabrics only belong at a party. Throw on sweaters and sweatshirts with them. Put on sneakers. Don’t let the time of day tell you what to do.
My picks:

I’d love to know: how do you do non-basic fall?

Fall Mornings

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love fall. But, especially right now, what I love most are fall mornings. Because if we’re honest, the “fall” I’m experiencing now is sweatshirt weather in the am then blazing hot in the afternoon. So, really fall mornings are the fall I’m working with, and I’m not holding back when it comes to dressing for fall.

What goes better with a cool, crisp morning than a great fall set? I love purple (for many reasons) and this suede skirt set is my ultimate fall morning go-to. It’s a little heavy for when the afternoons heat up, but for the mornings that are true to season, it’s simply perfect.

Investment Piece: Fall Mornings
Investment Piece: Fall Mornings

If your fall mornings call for business, sets like these are perfect: I love a great skirt set with hose and heels. The suede makes it anything but boring, and allows for your fall mornings to switch to fall nights. The great news is that sets like these also go great with boots (because we can’t have fall without boots), sneakers, or anything you want to pair with it!

Of course, the best thing about a set is that you don’t have to wear it as such. I’ve worn this skirt with graphic tees, sweatshirts, sneakers, flats, just about everything. The top I usually wear as a jacket, BUT I love it with flare jeans and boots for a pulled together chic look.

This set is vintage from Featherstone Vintage, you can find amazing finds there!

In the meantime, I’ve found similar sets and great fall boots, linked for your shopping pleasure below. I’m going to keep rocking fall in the mornings till fall lasts all day. How about you?
