Fashion Halloween: Lady MacBeth

Fashion Halloween, lady Macbeth, investment piece, fashion blogger,

I’ve been a 1950s housewife and a mermaid, you know I’m an actress–is it any surprise that I would chose a Shakespeare character for our next Fashion Halloween segment? (Missed the last two? Get caught up here and ) I have always loved Macbeth, and when I tutored kids would always suggest Lady as a costume idea; mainly as I felt that it would be easy and fun –I mean who doesn’t want to pace and rub their hands saying “Out Damn Spot” all night? And this year? I decided to take my own advice! The look is simple (full disclosure, I based my look on the Marion Collitard version from 2015, haven’t seen that version? You should), all you need is a dress that lends itself to a gown, meaning maybe a train, maybe a sleeve, but really any long dress will do. (This dress look familiar? See the original look here) I happened to have a rhinestone headpiece. And chose to do very simple makeup-hallowed eyes as the main look. Of course, if you wanted a more “traditional” look you could of course rent a “Shakespeare” costume. However, a wild woman driven crazy and muttering to herself? That’s a fashion Halloween I could get behind!

One of the biggest “looks” this season is a dress over jeans, and I love it! As a tall girl this is an old trick I’ve used to get away with mini-dresses that are just on the edge of being too short. It’s a great way to get away with wearing something short (although loves, this look also looks great with longer skirts and dresses, trust me, please and try it!) and it’s a fresh way to get a new look out of your pieces! Because Fall is taking it’s time (though it is coming) I love the look of a sleeve less fall dress (wool, checked, perfection–this actually came with a belt and I also can’t wait to wear this dress with its belt and flat boots!) over cropped jeans with ankle booties. It’s fall-like, it’s fresh, and it’s fun! So, would you try this look?

And onto fashion:

Ballet was one of my first loves and to this day I can’t resist dressing like a ballerina–ballet pink, tutu like skirts, leotards. You name it, I’m in. But I also like a little edge (see here). So when the chance appeared to shoot a sweet ballet-pink outfit in a construction zone I took it (I just love juxatipositons)! I also love how this skirt is a bit sheer, and how the leotard shows just enough of a back; meaning that it’s sweet but no one aspect is too sweet. The lace up shoes just add to my ballet fantasy. And yet, I don’t feel like a little girl playing dress up! I’m a woman playing dress up, and that’s oh-so-much-better!

Happy Monday! XO RA

Fashion Halloween: Mermaid

Last week on our Fashion Halloween segment we chatted Betty Draper (see those photos here) and while I loved being Betty, I couldn’t resist the chance to be a mermaid. I have a fascination with mermaids (I’m an Ocean baby) and often go around saying I’m one (and you can’t prove I’m not, also I’ve posted about getting mermaid photos done here). So, this seemed like a natural progression. There are tons of mermaid costumes online, for both Halloween and swimming (and I’m trying to convince myself that I don’t need a mermaid fin-links below for shopping) but for this look I chose to do more “make-at home”. This skirt is from H&M and I have had it for years, for this look I bought green and purple tulle and pinned it to the hem. The shoes are Sophia Webster from last fall, the top is from Hot Topic (found here). For the make-up I simply put glitter all over my face, using liquid gold eyeliner for lipstick, however there are many mermaid make-up tutorials I love, including this one that I love! I hope you enjoy mermaid-ing as much as I do!

You were promised a pink outfit once a week to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we aim to please! I fell in love with this pink number from Bloomers and Frocks (read my write up of them here), the way it moved, the color–every time I put it on I have to shimmy! It’s just that fun. So for a wedding in the last bit of warm weather, it’s just perfect. I also think it would be perfect at dinner, at parties, just simply as it is! With the ruffles and fitted waist, it really needs no embellishments; and while I chose gold shoes, it would also go great with nude, black, silver, or a matching shade!

Again, it is Breast Cancer Awareness month so remember to get you and your loved ones checked!

Happy Wednesday! XO RA

We know I love any and all things Gucci so when I found this Gucci-like top at Beehive (which we know I also love, read about them here) I knew I had to have it. I love the semi-sheer, the floral, the tie. I love the nod it gives to Gucci, and yet love it with simple jeans and mules (yes, it would look great more dressed up as well, as well as layered under sweaters). A note about the mules–super comfy and they go with everything! It’s the perfect combo for the beginning of fall, and on Mondays I can’t think of anything better than easy and perfect!

Monochrome looks are a go-to for me (they are simple but allow for so much personality). And here? I love the pop of these snaked shoes (although snake is almost a neutral, I promise). The strapped pump is everywhere this season but when I was shopping, I wanted one that was a little big of a stand-out. And Jcrew delivered! I love the snake-print, I love the strap, I love the thicker, stacked heel. Add to that a basic sweater with cut outs and this one tone outfit is a bit more. The shoes go with everything, and I like that the sweater is a little unexpected! I’m wearing the sweater mainly with high waisted pants, jeans, and skirts; but you could also layer it, or show a bit more skin! Either way, this snaked look is Friday approved!

Fashion Halloween: Betty Draper

I love Halloween, I’m a theatre major, actress and into fashion–costumes are fun to me! I love really dressing for a part, even if that part is just handing out candy. Last year we got into some fashion costumes (here) but this year I wanted to devote more time to it. A great costume can sometimes take some time and effort, though my goal is to present (for the most part) costumes that are fashion (and therefore made from your closet); I’ve picked costumes I’m actually considering being this year–and also costumes I think are fun! (Side note: I also love costumes you buy and in the past have been Catwoman and WonderWoman–I approve and while I’m not presenting those ideas, I still think they are fashion and love them!) So for the next few Thursday’s be prepared for Fashion Halloween, we’ll get you dressed up!

First up: Betty Draper. I loved Mad Men, especially the fashion. And I loved the episode when Betty shot the pigeons–and that makes for a fun, yet easy costume!

Fashion Halloween, Investment Piece, Betty Draper

Loves, this is basically an excuse to wear your nice PJs out. It’s simply a nice nightgown (or a slip dress would work), a great robe (this one is vintage, I got it on Etsy but you can use what you have), and slippers (these are cashmere mules from The Real Real but I think almost anything would work:mules, feathered shoes, any heel). The great thing? It’s completely comfy (and if you like you can smoke and drink all night and be in character). The trick of this costume is in the details;

Perfect makeup:red lips, eyeliner and mascara. Red nails. And bob your hair (I followed an online tutorial here and there are a ton more out there!)
Full disclosure: I didn’t buy a toy gun for this (or cigarettes) but that is an option (Most Halloween or toy stores have them); I felt like the essence of the costume came across without it!

I love this idea, or the idea of dressing like your favorite character in general! Check back next week for our next costume!

Loves, I have to admit that there are times when I can be afraid of color, which sounds weird I know, as I encourage you to try color. But we all love to stick to what we know. So when I first saw this stunning Solace London top, I wanted it in cream. I loved the juxatipositon of the t-shirt top with the attached train (I envision running up and down stairs in it-hence the shoot setting). And yet, the cream was sold out in my size (note this is UK sizing and a bit smaller than what we’re typically offered in the States). My choices were this maroon and blue number or nothing at all. So, I took a chance–and I’m so glad I did! While it’s not what I would normally pick, I love the maroon with the blue (it really pops and is fun!). And scared though I was of the color, this is really still easy to pair–here with shorts for fall transitioning, over jeans, skirts. It goes with black, cream, brown. Yes, the blue is a pop, but the maroon is very grounding. Next time you have a choice, I say go with the color, you might just surprise yourself!

We know I love a suit (see here, here, and here), so it’s not a surprise that I love this Pink Suit from JCrew. I love the color (it pops and manages to be classic and a standout), the cut (I feel like a real grown up) and that the pieces work separately (with tops and jeans). I love that it feels like New York. I love that the pink color is perfect for the season, not only fall but as we know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (and as you may know, my family was touched by this disease this year, so expect a pink outfit every week as a little reminder to get checked, have your loved ones checked, and take it seriously). But mainly I love that it’s a pink suit, and feels powerful, and not little girl-like. So, everyone wins?

Happy Monday! XO RA
