Thanksgiving is the most underrated holiday of our time, and it’s not just because of pie. It’s because of all the holidays, it’s completely possible to make it your own. I’ve gone to family affairs, both casual and formal, and loved them. I’ve spent the day by myself watching football and had a ball. I’ve gone to friend’s house and spent the day drinking wine and catching up, those days were amazing. My point? There is no “one” way to celebrate Thanksgiving. Dinner? Lunch? Both? Thanksgiving can be all that, and more. The one downfall to Thanksgiving? With endless possibilties, it can make it hard to get dressed.
From the most formal to the most causal, there’s a great chance that you care about what you’re wearing. And no matter what kind of dinner your outfit has 3 requirements:
Look Great:
If you’re thinking about your mom, your date, or yourself, holidays are a time to care a bit about how you look. Does this mean that you have to wear a ball gown? Not at all, I’ve worn sweats (the nice kind) to many a turkey feast. But let’s be honest, we want to look great.
Comfy for Eating:
Even the strictest personal trainer I’ve ever worked with agreed that if there is a time to EAT, it’s Thanksgiving. So you don’t want anything that makes that activity uncomfortable. From sheath dresses to elastic pants, the good news is that there are options!
Comfy for Going Home
You ate. You drank. Now what? You have to deal with the aftermath. From heels that hurt after a certain time frame (we all have them) to the pants that are just uncomfortable, Thanksgiving is a day to think long term. Most of us attend events that are hours long, so comfort in traveling and the aftermath of eating is another factor to think about!
I know, these can seem overwhelming on top of the formal to super casual choices. Luckily for you, I’ve divided Thanksgiving outfits into 3 categories, and each one has the above criteria in mind. Ready to eat? Ready to dress for Thanksgiving? Me too!
More Formal
My go-to outfits for a more formal Thanksgiving include a sheath dress and kitten heels: it’s comfortable, let’s you eat, and allows you to run around all day if you need.
Middle of the Road
In my opinion, these kind of Thanksgivings can be the hardest to dress for. You don’t want to over dress, but you probably shouldn’t show up in sweats? So, what do you wear? My go-to’s? A great pair of jeans or black pants, a great sweater, and ankle boots.
Casual
Real Talk? I’m a fan of a great “dressy” sweatpant. I also think that there is no better day to rock some than Thanksgiving. It hits all the criteria. And if you’re going to a very causal Thanksgiving I can think of nothing better than sweats.
I’d love to know–what do you wear to Thanksgiving? What are your criteria for a great Thanksgiving outfit?
