Spring Trends to buy Vintage

With every season there are the new offerings, and the temptation to buy all new things. I love the cycle–but staying on trend doesn’t mean that you have to buy all new. What if I told you that there was a way to stay on trend AND shop resale/vintage? Shopping vintage was one of the first ways I was able to buy brands I loved at prices I could afford. And shopping vintage opened up a whole new world for me.

There are several reasons to love vintage: price, quality, style. I’m a huge fan of mixing old and new. And there are times when old is new–what’s the saying everything comes back around? This season there are some amazing trends to play with, and some of these spring trends are best bought vintage. From logos to costume jewelry, buying vintage can get you what you want (seriously, some of the vintage logos are EXACTLY like to the new offerings), and save a bit (to buy more of course!).

These are the items that are on trend but you should be buying vintage this spring:

Logos
From bags to clothing, designer logos are in–and vintage. Buying these pieces vintage not only allows you to get pieces at a fraction of the cost of new, some of the vintage offerings are identical to what went down the runways. Here are some of my picks:

Shoulder Pads
Love them or hate them, a strong shoulder is “in” for Spring. I went through a period where I HATED this look, but I have to admit, I now kinda love it. My styling tip? Less is more and use the shape to make your waist look tiny. Also, stick to colora and patterns that you love, a strong silhouette is not the time to try a pattern you’re on the fence about! Here are some of my picks:

Top Handle Bags
Ladylike and a great investment, this a trend that you should ONLY buy vintage. Why? You can get quality bags that are stunning for less than $35. Here are some of my picks:

Lace
Vintage lace is often hand made versus machine made, making it higher quality. There are so many ways to get vintage lace (dealers sometimes sell it by the yard), but there are so many dresses, tops, and skirts out there at amazing prices, this spring trend is too good to pass up! Here are my picks:

Costume Jewelry
From pearls to gold chains, vintage costume jewelry is a higher quality and better made than much of modern jewelry today. Even faux pieces were often gold plated, and could pass for real! Here are some of my picks:

I’d love to know: what are your go-to vintage buys? And do you buy new trends vintage? What about these spring trends?

Not all cliches are worth avoiding. And not everything in your “get rid of pile” should be given away. Weird advice? But very true.

School Girl, or prep, done right is fun and a little cheeky, as well as classic. (Tory Burch has made a career of this fact.) Pairing a great sweater with a plaid skirt? It doesn’t have to be cliche. And amazing and fun shoes aren’t the only way to do it–though I think amazing shoes always help. Classic combos are classic for a reason. Cliches become fun when you make them your own.

For me, with a school girl or preppy look, it’s in the details. Like necklines and colors. Hair and make-up. And of course, amazing shoes. Perfect for work, or after work.

Investment Piece: School Girl Twist

I stand by the statement that not everything in your “to-go” pile needs to go. This vintage skirt was my moms. And clearly, the moths loved it too. And while that may be a deal breaker for some, I don’t mind when my vintage is a little beat up. This skirt is still a stunner-deep plaid, soft wool, and just the right length. Give away the things that no longer serve you, but don’t be afraid to keep pieces that fit perfectly (you and your life), even if they’re a little flawed.

These are the questions I have. How do you school girl twist? Or take a fashion cliche and make it your own? Also, what do you keep that’s a little worn?
I’d really love to know!

Sunday Chronicles: In Love with Potential

It’s the “season” of love. And I hope whatever Valentine’s means to you that you had a great day last week! I got to thinking about love: falling in it, rising in it, and all the times that we think we’re in love, but we really love their potential. It happens with clothes, too. There are things that we want, or that are in our closet, that we think will fit a certain way, go a certain way, will make us a certain kind of person. And sometimes, they do. But, there are times when the potential that we love is all that’s there. What do we do then?

I recently fell in love with a pair of shoes. I had outfits for days planned, knew that they would be chic, and that they would fit perfectly. They’re a bust. These shoes simply don’t fit me well at all–they make my feet look odd. And they don’t quite go with what I thought they would. Yet, I kept trying: to make them fit, to make them into what I wanted them to be. The potential was so good. And I’m not good at letting good potentional go. But, loves, sometimes we have to.

So, I made us a little video with some thoughts. Do I have the answers? No. Do I know how to resist falling in love with just potentional? No. But I’m working on it.

If you have solutions, I would love to hear them!
Also-I’ve linked similar items to the outfit in the video in the #ootd below, I can vouch that these pieces have much more than potentional! (To shop follow me on the liketoknow.it app and use the screenshot of the pic!)
Wishing us all a week of real love and amazing shoes! Xo RA

One of the best fashion investments you can make? A vintage #Adolfo suit.
One of the best conversation starters? A vintage #Adolfo suit.
One of the things you should be buying today? You guessed it : a vintage #Adolfo suit.

Part Chanel-like chic, but much more affordable, Adolfo is one of those vintage brands that screams timeless but feels modern. And the great part about a suit? You can wear it seperate, it looks great with even just a white tee, and it elevates everything.
A little bit about Adolfo:
Adolfo began his career as a milliner and apprenticed at Balenciaga before moving to New York in 1948 to apprentice at Bergdorf Goodman. After receiving several awards for his hat designs, he opened his own millinery house in 1962 with a loan from Bill Blass. He began designing clothing for his models to wear while showing his hats and by the mid 1960s his celebrity clients ranged from the Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Betsy Bloomingdale to Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Nancy Reagan, who wore a red Adolfo dress, currently in the Smithsonian, to her husband’s second inaugural ball. In the 1960s Adolfo’s designs were playful and even flamboyant, though by the 1980s he was best known for his ladylike, Chanel-inspired cardigan suits.

Adolfo is collected by many a vintage fan. My favorite places to find it are eBay and etsy. I personally love how versatile the pieces are, and how “grown up” the suits make me feel. I’ve found some #Adolfo suits for you below. They’re perfect with any sort of top, for your big work day, date night, or anytime you want to feel like a lady.

Sunday Chronicles: Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

There may be a rumor that I don’t like Valentine’s Day (see here, here, and here.) Let it be said that I am a great fan of love, and all the trappings that come with it, but a little wary of days where we “have to” anything. But, as long as it’s with a free heart, let’s tell each other we love each other and buy some gifts!

Be it for you, or for anyone you love, here are some of my picks for what to give this year for Valentine’s Day!

Some of my fave pens? Custom, personal Executive Nautical. (A friend makes them and they are just to die for!) My other picks for saying “thanks for working so hard!”:

Self Care
Spa days can not only be really romantic, they can be a much needed way to let your loved ones take care of themselves. Can’t make it to the spa? Here are my picks for self care at home:

How To: Lingerie Dressing

Investment Piece: How to Lingerie Dressing

In the next week or so, many people will come to you with ideas about date night dressing, or Valentine’s Day looks. I’m not against any look for any kind of date night that makes you feel absolutely amazing. However, among the red, and pink, and hearts that will be on display:

Might I suggest something new for date night or Valentine’s Day.
Lingerie dressing.

Investment Piece: slip into something more comfortable

It’s like PJ Dressing’s older sister, just as comfy, and adds an unexpected element to any outfit.

Investment Piece: how to lingerie dressing
So, new ideas in mind, the question becomes how do you lingerie dress?

I’m glad you asked!

Lingerie dressing can be as simple as letting your new lacy items be seen through your outfit, or it can be as involved as wearing lingerie as the main component of your attire. My favorite ways to lingerie dress:

1. Wear a vintage slip as a dress or shirt
2. Wear something sheer and let my black lingerie peek through
3. Wear a corset or teddy as a top (if you’re a little shy, a blazer or sweater over looks amazing!)
4. Wear a great bra as a top (again, partially covered if needed)

There is so much room of personalization and layers with lingerie dressing, it’s hard to go wrong. I personally love the vintage looks (and yes, often pair them with sweaters of jackets to give just a peep!). There are ways to show as little or much as you like! Do you lingerie dress? Would you?

I would love to hear about it!

I’ve linked some of my favorite lingerie items to wear out below! Happy lingerie dressing!

Slip into Something More Comfortable

Investment Piece: slip into something more comfortable

The phrase “slip into something more comfortable” can mean oh so many things. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of PJ dressing (see here, here, and here. So I tend to take the phrase “slip into something more comfortable” a little literally. As in, why not slip into your pjs? Or, more specifically, wear your pjs out?

Leather and lace are a classic combo (another thing I love? Juxatipositons!) so the thought to wear a vintage slip over leather leggings was a natural for me. (Side note: I love vintage slips: they make great dresses, tops, and are perfect under sweaters.) Leather leggings? Your life will change when you start wearing them like jeans (and bonus: they can dress anything up). Together? A little tough, a little sweet, a little perfect.

I love looks like this for date night (the kind where you go out or stay in), any sort of night on the town, or happy hours when you really want to be on the couch.

Sunday Chronicles: Super Bowl Food

Investment Piece: Sunday Chronicles: SuperBowl Food

As much as I love fashion, I also love football. (We all have so many different sides). SuperBowl Sunday is always something I look forward to-the game, the commercials, and the food. Fun fact: before I became a fashion blogger I seriously thought about being a food blogger (before I really knew what a blogger was). For years, I’ve been on my own personal combination of Paleo diet and have loved learning to cook/make adjustments to traditional comfort foods, or game foods, and making them my own-little diet friendly foods.

Below I’m giving away some of the goodies I’m whipping up today–because nothing goes better with the SuperBowl than food!

Cauliflower Pizza
Finding Cauliflower Crust was a game changer for me. Being gluten free/low carb, pizza was something I basically gave up for years. This crust let me have it back! I don’t make my own cauliflower crust. (I’m just lazy enough). I love the brand Caulipower (but really, any brand that you like will do).
I also feel bad calling this a recipe. Pizza is basically a free for all!
I do like pre-cooking my crust a little first to ensure that it’s crispy. Then I load up with my favorite sauce, veggies, protein, and cheese (I eat mainly goat cheeses). Cook and then eat! It’s the perfect SuperBowl Food!

Nachos
Like the pizza, this isn’t really a recipe, but an excuse to throw amazing foods on top of chips. To negate, I usually use a combination of plantain/beets/baked/chips that use coconut or avocado oil. Again, some veggies, some beans, some jalapeños, tons of goat cheese, broil and dig in.

Muffins
Investment Piece: SuperBowl Food

I know: you don’t think muffins when you think Super Bowl food. But these Paleo muffins are almost like a desert (though I also don’t turn down dark chocolate) and you can eat the left overs for breakfast!
You’ll need:
3-4 ripe bananas
4 eggs
(The recipe calls for 1/4 cup maple syrup. I didn’t add it the last time I made these muffins, though I did add 1 TBS maple sugar. I really think this is to taste, but that’s what the batter is for, so you can make sure it’s sweet enough for you before you put it in the oven!)
Scant 1/2 c peanut butter (or nut butter of your choosing)
1/4 c oil (coconut is best)
Splash vanilla
Mix well and add to:
1 1/2 cup coconut flour (technically the recipe called for almond with 2 TBS coconut, but I usually go all in with coconut)
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 TBS cinnamon

Mix all together well. I then add chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. You could also use more nut butte as a “filling” (pour some batter in your pan, nut butter, more batter).

Pour batter into lined or greased muffin pan and bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Enjoy!

I would love to know–what SuperBowl Foods are you making?
Make sure to check out my Instagram stories today to see what we ended up eating!

The stories that you can tell with a graphic tee? Endless. Maybe you make a stand, are cheeky-er than you can be with your mouth, showcase your wit and humor, or maybe it’s just something you love. I adore pairing graphic tees with anything and everything for these very reasons.
Graphic tees let you show off your wildness, and to me, that’s beautiful.
This graphic tee? Just letting you know how much I love dinosaurs (like a 5yo), and that maybe there’s a little wildness in me.

A story I love to tell with my fashion?
Traditional (or classic) with something a little wild. Classic pants with a graphic tee. To me, it says that I’m a little bit old school and a little wild. (And maybe a bit funny!)
What story does that outfit say to you?
