Summer Black

I love pieces that are multi-seasonal–and this black jacket from Zara is a perfect example. I’ve pinned it and worn it over shorts, making it great for summer. I’ve also put it over jeans. It’s great open, it’s great closed. And while it’s light weight (and sheer on bottom), it’s great for fall (I’m picturing it over pants and even layering a sweater over it). And these shoes–I’m a fan of all things red!

Sunday Chronicles: RLvsOnline

We currently live in a world that’s driven by our online prescences. We document our lives, edit them, filter them, share them, and pray people like them.  People and companies worry about clicks, likes, shares; there are now studies about the effect of being on social media too much, but we as a society continue to post. At its best social media is a great way to stay in contact with friends, provide distraction, and engage everyone in a conversation. At its worst social media can be consuming, overwhelming, and can make you feel inadequate.

Social media is a big part of my daily life, much of our business is done via social media, and it’s a great way to grow the blog. It can be fun and I love keeping up with you and my friends online. It can also be draining. I worry about my brand online, I think about sharing, I want you to like my pictures.  If I’m honest I will also admit that there’s pressure about what to post, how often to post, and how honest to be about my private life. There’s been a lot of loss in my family lately, and everyone has bad days, but I don’t want my social feeds to be full of depressing thoughts. I genuinely enjoy sharing my fashion with you, and during this time it’s been a much needed distraction. But is it honest to pretend that everything is hunky dory online? Does it matter?

I’ve been thinking about these questions a lot lately; and unfortunately loves, I have no answers. I think our vulenrabilty is part of the journey (sometimes the best parts) and sharing that with others can strengthen us all. I think that we all get to choose our boundaries on posting, there is no right way to do this. But I think above all, we are all human behind these beautiful photos- with flaws, good days and bad days, and a need for connection. I think social media can help with bad days, and I also think there’s nothing wrong with sharing your struggles online. Perhaps the challenge for us all is to find the balance in the posts, and to figure out how to share the best bits of ourselves when we share, even if those parts are the vulnerable ones.

I’d love to get your input! How do you handle your social media? Do you share your struggles? What are your thoughts on people who do?

Wishing us all a week of journeys and amazing shoes! XO RA

I’m still obsessed with this season’s off the shoulder silhouette, but love this fresh take on it with split bell sleeves. It looks amazing with these perfectly torn Levis, but looked just as great tucked into black pants with heels. And speaking of these jeans- Levis married the perfect combination of their vintage fit and modern fit (read great butt with a hint of stretch) and the rips in the knees are just right!

Hope your Friday is going swimmingly!

Chanel Makeover

image

Loves, I am not a big make-up person. Not that I don’t wear it- and when I’m cast and on set I often have to wear a lot- but in my day-to-day life I tend to stick to necessary concealer, powder, mascara, and lipstick. Part of it is that I like a natural look, part of it is I’m not very good at applying my own makeup. So when I was offered the chance to get a make-over and learn from Chanel Master-Make-Up Artist John Fussell I jumped at it!

image

I sometimes find make-overs intimidating. I feel like I leave not looking like myself and completely unable to recreate any part of the look I liked. That was not the case at all with this experience! John and his team walked me through every step they did- explaining theory behind their technique and answering any questions I had. Then, after my entire look was complete, the team went over the steps and colors again- making sure that I felt confident that I could do it myself!
image

I went for a glowy skin with smoky eye look, and was thrilled with the results! I will be using this technique for my next night out; but John also went over some basic make-up guidelines. Below are some general tips I’ve learned, and can’t wait to incorporate into my routine!

-Do your foundation, blush, and lip before you do your eyes. Most people start with the eyes, but leaving them till last allows the proper amount of drama, and ensures that everything flows together. You can think of it like a bridge- there’s one between your neck and lips, then your cheeks, then your eyes- everything should transition
– Light changes based on season, adjust accordingly. Summer light is more golden, winter light has a blue-ish hue. You can warm up your summer make-up by hinting a hint of gold to your primer
-Blend, Blend, Blend
-The upward swipe of blush can age you. Smile and use a circle motion for an age-defying look. Make sure any contour you choose to use is flesh toned
– Anyone can wear any color- the secret is where you put it and how much. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Also, make-up colors follow basic artistic rules- white illuminates, black contracts
-Try a brown masacara if you’re blonde (and Chanel has a great chocolate brown one). It’s a great color to make your eyes pop- and will also be big for fall. Colored mascara is here through 2018- have some fun with that too!
-Putting a little color near your hairline (light blush or bronzer) pulls everything together
-If you have deep set eyes (and most of us do) eye liner is more effective on the water line- just make sure your eyeliner is waterproof to prevent smudging.
-Take care of your skin:drink enough water and moisturize
-Use the proper tools. Remember the small the brush the more intense color it will leave on your skin
– Check your reflection from the side before you leave the house
-Apply as much of your eye make-up as possible with your eyes open

I’d love to know- what make-up tricks do you swear by? What are your make-over stories?

John can be found giving make-overs and classes at Chanel counters nationwide and on Facebook!

I keep having to tell myself that I don’t have to have all the bomber jackets. But I just couldn’t resist this Zara one! It feels so luxurious-from the silk to the design, and goes with everything from shorts to skirts. I’m also obsessed with these tulle socks, I have a thing for socks and heels, these elevate that! The jacket is light enough for cool summer mornings, but I know I will be wearing it through fall–so see, I had to have it!

Great Investments: Gucci Bag

image

My blog’s name came from my personal theory that great fashion is a great investment- beyond resell value (Birkins make that case), but I think fashion with lasting value that brings you joy is worth investing in. I’ve often spent months saving for a special piece, and the joy these pieces bring me is something I cherish! So in this new monthly segment I will showcase some of my favorite pieces- ones that I’ve saved for, stand apart, or have sentimental value; and first up: this divine Gucci bag.

image

We know I am a Gucci girl- their current lines are just perfection, and this bag is the epitome of that! The detail, color, iconic logo- when I found this, and it fit into my budget, I absolutely couldn’t resist!

From the snake to the bee and the flowers, every time I carry this bag it just makes me happy!

I’d love to know – what’s one of your favorite pieces?

Happy Tuesday! XO RA

Night Party

imageimageimageimageimageimage

This skirt loves. It is just simply breath taking- the colors, the sequins, the length. I wore it dressed up, but am planning to throw on sandals and a t-shirt with it and let it make a statement. These pictures were taken one night after dinner, moments before a storm, but even with the coming rain I couldn’t resist the temptation to get this skirt under the lights! As the saying goes, fashion is worth the risk!

Sunday Chronicles: Summer Bucket List

image

Loves, I don’t know about you, but I have had a week! And one of the things that has gotten me through is thinking about all the things I’d like to do this summer (because loves, it’s definitely summer and anticipation is part of the fun!). I’m sure I will add to this list, but I’m already looking forward to the fun I will have- and in my book that’s the cure for a week!

– Spend time with friends and family. This seems like such a trite answer but as a gal who bounces around I’m looking forward to LA, TX, hopefully Ohio, and a few other places where I can spend quality time with those I love!
– As much beach as I can get! I’m a water baby and need some vitamin C!
– Travel. Vacation is just as important as work and I have wine trips and the beach and hopefully something big in the works!
– Lazy days for reading and matinees. In my childhood my mom was great to balance days full of camp and activities with days where we lazed around with books and movies. As an adult I love this balance – and often need the downtime!
– Projects. Of course working here, writing projects, painting and acting endeavors are on tap- and nothing excites me more!
– Summer food. Strawberries, watermelon, bbq, pinics- need I say more?

I’d love to know – what’s on your list? What’s your favorite thing to do during the summer?

Wishing us all a week of delicious anticipation and amazing shoes! XO RA

Oh Lanvin

There is something about a classic shirt dress–especially when it comes with details like a french cuff, is made of hammered silk, and its tag reads Lanvin. This is one of my finds at the Kit Vintage–and while it’s not a true “party dress”, it’s quickly become a staple in my wardrobe, and has made a party appearance. With flats it’s great for running errands and day wear. With heels it’s great for dinner and parties. I’ve worn it with and without the belt. In fact, I haven’t found a way that I haven’t loved it. And these shoes!!

The Kit Vintage

image

The places I love to shop come in all shapes and sizes, but we know I hold a special place in my heart for vintage; I also hold a special place in my heart for party dresses and the two meet happily at The Kit Vintage! The Kit Vintage is truly a woman named Robyn–who is lovely and kind and also has a special place in her heart for party dresses. This is not the place for jeans or casual wear, but if, like me, you can always find a reason for a party dress this is a magical place! (Side note: Robyn does carry some ready to wear, but truly specializes in party dresses–and what she has found is almost magical–and well worth snagging an invite somewhere!)

The Kit Vintage Boutique is located inside Platt Jewelry in LA; the jewelry itself is magical, the store is owned by Larry, Robyn’s husband and you can try on the estate and art deco gems (what he specializes in) when you try on clothes. I’m waiting to see what happens when I just don’t take the jewels off! Robyn has hand curated a great selection of, again, mainly more formal clothes–but one of the things that I love about shopping here is that Robyn knows the providence of it all. She loves it, and there is something just breath taking about knowing the dress is Valentino’s lawyer’s wife’s. Or Mike Tyson’s girlfriend’s from 1992. Or worn to a specific Hollywood party in 1956. Part of what I love about vintage is that the pieces have history–and Robyn knows hers.
image
If you’re shopping in store Robyn is there to not only tell you amazing stories, but to help you find the perfect piece for you. She has heels (and let’s not forget the jewelry!) to complete the look. And if you’re lucky to find something, it feels special–like it was meant for you! Again, Robyn is one of the sweetest shop owners I know–I have never felt pressure to buy anything, she ensures that anything you pick is a match for you–and did I mention the beautiful clothes??
